How the calculator works
The calculator follows the same order as a normal tax invoice. It starts with the billed amount, takes off any discount, adds GST or VAT on the discounted amount, and arrives at the invoice total. Then it subtracts the withholding tax (WHT) your client deducts, and what is left is the amount you actually receive.
A worked example
Say you bill 100,000 before tax with 18% GST. The tax is 18,000 and the invoice total is 118,000. If your client deducts 10% WHT on the taxable amount, the deduction is 10,000, so you receive 108,000. The chart shows each of these steps as a bar, so you can see at a glance how much each deduction takes.
Find what to bill for a target amount
Freelancers often know what they need to receive and want to know what to put on the invoice. Switch the first option to the target mode, enter the amount you want in your account, and the calculator works backwards through discount, tax and WHT. With the same rates as above, receiving 108,000 means billing 100,000 before tax.
Which WHT base should I choose?
Withholding rules differ between countries and between types of payment. The calculator lets you choose whether the percentage applies to the taxable amount, to the total including tax, or to the tax amount only. If you are not sure, check your contract or ask your accountant which base your client uses.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I receive after GST and WHT?
Start with the invoice amount before tax, subtract any discount, add GST or VAT, then subtract the withholding tax your client deducts. The calculator does each step and shows the result as a 3D waterfall chart.
How do I find the amount to invoice for a target payment?
Switch the first option to the target mode and enter the amount you want to receive. The calculator works backwards through the discount, tax and withholding tax and shows the amount you should bill before tax.
Does WHT apply to the tax amount or to the total?
It depends on the rule that applies to your payment. Some withholding is taken on the taxable amount, some on the total including tax, and some on the tax amount only. Choose the base that matches your case.
Why does the chart show lakh and crore for PKR and INR?
For PKR and INR the totals use the number grouping common in Pakistan and India. Other currencies use the usual thousands and millions.
Can I add this calculator to my own website?
